Performance evaluation is the process of evaluating the employee's output & performance against expectations set by the management through goals and objectives of the organization. The process of performance evaluation is essential for any organization to make sure that their employees are in line with the organizational goals & also to have a comprehensive idea on each & every employees performance.

"Performance Evaluation is defined as a formal and productive procedure to measure an employee’s work and results based on their job responsibilities. It is used to gauge the amount of value added by an employee in terms of increased business revenue, in comparison to industry standards and overall employee return on investment (ROI)." (QuestionPro, 2021)

“Performance evaluation means evaluating an employee’s current and/or past performance relative to his performance standards.” (Dessler, 2017)

In conclusion we could analyze that the performance evaluation is an extremely important tool for any organization to put into practice as it will help to give both the organization & the employee a clear understanding of their achievement & position against the goals & objectives set earlier & also it will highlight their shortcomings giving them a chance to improve upon them increasing their productivity. Most organizations carry out this technique on an annual basis whilst some organization conduct performance evaluations on a bi-annual or quarterly basis which might be more effective due to the regular feedback & evaluations received which would help minimize performance deficiencies, however in adverse the higher the frequency the costs & time involved also increased so it might not be feasible for all entities. Nevertheless it is highly recommended to conduct at least an annual performance appraisal to make sure that the organization & it's employees are on the right track.

  1. Nice article Jude . Performance evaluation directly affects employee engagement and ultimately affects organizational performance. Therefore, the annual assessment is not enough. There should be an appropriate mechanism for continuous evaluation throughout the year, and communication should be carried out in a shorter time frame.   3. Performance evaluation is the key tool to measure the employee performance and to fill the gap if there is any training requirement or necessary of replacement. Moreover, it is the tool to motivate employees and to get their extra commitments. as discussed, it should be conducted frequently not annually which let the employee to show their performance and let them to keep the work momentum as well.
