Job Enrichment & Job Enlargement as a tool of Motivation

(Zigsaw, 2021)

Job enrichment & Job enlargement are two techniques that is often used by many HR professionals both as tools for motivation & as a method of intrinsic rewarding.

The basic idea behind the Job enrichment technique is to expand or add new dimensions to an existing job role giving it more responsibility which will act as a motivating factor for the said employee. Job enrichment is also identified as a vertical enhancement of a job role, where someone is given a higher level of authority & responsibilities than presently available.

In contrast to Job Enrichment, Job Enlargement is a technique where the assigned range of responsibilities of an individual is expanded however the level of authority is not increased. The Job Enlargement tool could be described as a horizontal expansion tool of a job role as it only increases the level of responsibility associated with the job whilst there is no change to the level of authority

Benefits of Job Enrichment & Job Enlargement.

  • Act as a motivational tool for the employees.
  • Increase organizational efficiency & productivity.
  • Will help to break the monotony of the job.
  • Creates a positive organizational culture / work environment.
  • Improves employee mental & physical health.
  • Increase employee satisfaction & reduce turnover.
  • Will create a long term sustainable business model.
  • Increase in the service quality which will also increase the customer satisfaction.
Conclusion

In conclusion we could analyze that both Job Enrichment & Job Enlargement are two extremely effective tools when it comes to staff motivation however the implementation of both of these techniques should be carefully analyzed by the management as there is no "One size fits all" approach when it comes to motivation, as such this should be approached on a case by case basis taking into account the competencies, skills, talents & adoptability of the individual before applying either of this approaches.

  1. Employee motivation is most important and challenging task in today's competitive market. Employee motivation is influenced by both internal and external factors. This presents a challenge for all employers, as they must prioritize creating an enjoyable work environment that meets employee expectations. Employers should prioritize creating a friendly, respectful, and inclusive work environment, which will ultimately increase productivity and contribute to goal achievement.

  2. Overall job enrichment and enlargement are employee motivation factors. Both enrichment and enlargement may motivate different type of employees differently. For instance, an employee who seek authority in work will thrive for job enrichment (maybe millennials) and for another more work in their present job role would be motivating and challenging. Management should identify the potential of the employees and assign these roles accordingly. Thank you.

  3. A Good article Jude,
Expansion of employment opportunities as well as job enrichment are excellent motivators for workers. Employment expansion increases worker productivity and skill sets while employment enhancement is designed to raise their morale and increase work happiness.
In my point of view, In small and medium-sized businesses, job enlargement is ideal for unskilled or semi-skilled workers with some experience. As a side effect, employees may become more dissatisfied because, despite an increase in workload, they continue to receive the same compensation.
Job enrichment is ideal for large and centralized organizations because it gives employees more authority, which simplifies and streamlines work processes for everyone involved. In addition, it enhances employee satisfaction and allows them to focus on their own growth and advancement.

  9. Both job enlargement and job enrichment are extremely motivating factors for employees. Job enlargement refers to an increase in the work, responsibilities, and total burden of an employee in the same position. This could be done to increase job satisfaction and productivity while also preventing boredom and monotony. The practice of arranging and structuring a worker's tasks, responsibilities, and workload so that they have more control over their work is known as job enrichment.
