(ResearchLeap, 2021)

Even though through the years the terms "Recruitment" & "Selection" have become intertwined with each other overall they are two different nonetheless extremely important aspects of Human Resource Management which facilitates the attraction & hiring of the most suitable candidates to various job positions within the organization. In simple terms recruitment is the process of attracting  candidates for the job opening whilst the selection process is picking the most suitable candidate for that particular job opening. In this article we will be focusing on the Selection aspect of the HRM process

The extracts given below will emphasis the importance of having a proper selection mechanism in place.

"Hiring is the most important people function you have, and most of us aren’t as good at it as we think. Refocusing your resources on hiring better will have a higher return than almost any training program you can develop." (Bock, 2015)

"Hire people who are smarter than you are—whose talents surpass yours—and give them opportunities for growth. It’s the smart thing to do and it is a sign of high personal humility." (Martinuzzi, 2009)

"Hiring the wrong people is the fastest way to undermine a sustainable business." (Donaldson)

Process of selection.

The process of selection involves selecting the right person for the right job & going through the hundreds of job applications that was received during the recruitment process & matching their individual skills & competencies against the organizational requirements, this is an extremely important part of the process as it will help eliminate the unsuitable candidates & facilitate the selection of the most suitable candidate for the job opening considering the Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, & Other Characteristics (KSAO's) of the applicants, Usually the selection process comprises of many sub-components like;
  • Screening.
  • Initial elimination of unsuitable candidates. (Shortlisting)
  • Conducting an examination.
  • Interviews.
  • Checking references.
  • Medical Tests.
It is extremely important to go through this entire process when selecting the applicants as it will help the organization to get the "best fit" for the opening, also if this process is done right it will help the organization to greatly increase their productivity in the future & also save them a huge hassle down the line.

Importance of selection.
  • Increase organizational productivity & efficiency.
  • Reduce the margin of errors.
  • Saving the cost of having to change the personnel down the line if wrong individual is hired.
  • Less training & development costs.
  • Helps to have a comparison between the talent in the market in order to select the "best fit".
  • Will help the organization to create a "Talent Pool" of candidates who were not the right fit for the particular position but could be an extremely valuable resource in a future job opening.
Conclusion

In conclusion we could observe from the above information that selection is an extremely important component for any organization & that it plays a major role in the organizational process, as such most of the organizations do pay a significant amount of attention on their selections process to make sure that it is streamlined & is functioning well.

“The purpose of the selection is to match people to work. It is the most important element in any organization’s management of people simply because it is not possible to optimize the effectiveness of human resources, by whatever method, if there is a less than adequate match.” (Robert, 1997)
